The New NHS 111 Service
From 2013 a new telephone service will be available to patients needing urgent NHS support and advice. 111 will be a freephone number for any patients who may not feel their condition warrants dialling 999 for an emergency ambulance.
Trained health advisers, supported by experienced clinicians, will use a clinical assessment system, to assess callers' needs and determine the most appropriate course of action. This could include dispatching an ambulance, referring someone to an NHS service and giving advice on self care.
